How to build a rocket
Everything you need to build a rocket
To build a model rocket, you'll need the following components and tools:
- Model Rocket Kit or Blueprint: Provides instructions and materials for assembly. We would recommend building your design in OpenRocket first to simulate the launch. Make sure the centre of mass is at least 1.5 times the width of the rocket above the centre of pressure. This can all be easily measured on OpenRocket.
- Body Tube: The main structure of the rocket, usually made of cardboard or plastic.
- Nose Cone: The pointed front part that reduces aerodynamic drag.
- Fins: Attached to the lower end for stability during flight.
- Engine Mount: Holds the rocket engine securely.
- Tube Adapters: If you would like your rocket to have seperate sections then you need to use tube adapters to join two tubes together.
- Rocket Engines: Solid fuel engines that provide thrust.
- Recovery Materials: Parachute, streamer, or wadding to ensure a safe landing.
- Launch Lug: Guides the rocket on the launch rod during takeoff.
- Launch Pad, Igniter and Controller: Used to safely launch the rocket.
- Glue: Wood glue, plastic cement, or hot glue for assembly.
- Paint and Decals: Optional for decoration.
- Tools: Hobby knife, ruler, sandpaper, and pencil for construction.
